PRIMARY FUNCTIONS

  • The Mechanical Engineer will provide technical expertise in inspection, testing, and certification services across mechanical systems in Uganda. This role supports Bureau Veritas’s mission to ensure safety, quality, and regulatory compliance by conducting inspections, assessments, and audits of mechanical systems, equipment and related infrastructure in accordance with international standards and client requirements.

RESPONSIBILITES

  • Conduct Technical Inspections: Perform in-service and pre-service inspections of pressure vessels, piping systems, and mechanical equipment in accordance with API, ASME, and ISO standards
  • Prepare Inspection Reports: Document findings, non-conformances, and recommendations in comprehensive, client-ready technical reports
  • Certify Compliance: Verify equipment compliance with applicable regulatory codes (API 653, API 570, ISO standards) and issue certification documentation
  • Client Liaison: Communicate technical findings and recommendations to clients; respond to technical inquiries and provide expert guidance
  • Quality Assurance: Maintain detailed records of all inspections and ensure adherence to Bureau Veritas quality management systems and procedures
  • Site Supervision: Oversee inspection activities at client facilities; coordinate with third-party contractors and internal teams
  • Standards Compliance: Stay current with evolving international standards (API, ASME, ISO 9712) and apply them consistently to all assessments
  • Training & Mentoring: Support junior engineers and inspection technicians; contribute to team capability development
  • Risk Assessment: Identify mechanical and operational risks; recommend mitigation strategies and corrective actions.
  • Prepare quotations and respond to bids/proposals
  • Safety Culture Promotion: Actively promote a strong safety culture by modeling safe work practices, reporting hazards promptly, and participating in toolbox talks and safety briefings
  • Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) Compliance: Ensure all inspection activities comply with HSE regulations; conduct site risk assessments and implement appropriate safety controls
  • delivering presentations and pitches to prospective and existing clients to showcase value, up-sell services, and secure renewals.

EDUCATION

Bachelor’s Degree or above

Additional Certifications And Training:

  • LEEA – will be a plus
  • ISO 9712
  • API570, API653
  • CSWIP3.1 or CSWIP 3.2.2

MAJOR

Mechanical Engineering or related.

EXPERIENCE

At least 4-6 years of experience


KNOWLEDGE

  • Technical Standards & Codes: API 653, API 570, ASME BPVC, ISO 9712, and ISO 9001; ability to apply these standards consistently across all inspection activities
  • Inspection Methodologies: Visual inspection, Non-Destructive Testing (NDT), thickness measurement, corrosion assessment, and risk-based inspection (RBI) principles
  • Mechanical Systems: Pressure vessels, piping systems, welding processes, metallurgy, and material degradation mechanisms
  • Regulatory & Compliance: Ugandan industrial safety regulations, Ugandan standards, international best practices, and documentation requirements
  • Software & Tools: Technical drawing/CAD interpretation, inspection management software, Microsoft Office Suite, and inspection equipment calibration
