About the Role
The Operations Manager will be the on-the-ground leader responsible for building and running WDF’s Tindi Agribusiness Initiative in Madi Okollo District, West Nile. This is a start-up stage enterprise requiring a self-driven, innovative and practically experienced individual who can set up systems, manage a multi-enterprise farm, build a productive team and position Tindi as a commercially viable and socially impactful agribusiness. The ideal candidate is someone who thrives in ambiguity, can solve problems creatively and brings a farmer’s instinct combined with a manager’s discipline.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee all day-to-day operations of the Tindi Agribusiness Initiative — scheduling, task assignment, progress tracking and staff performance management
- Build, train and motivate a cohesive farm team, fostering a culture of accountability, innovation and learning
- Manage and develop the livestock unit — including cattle, goats, and other animals — ensuring proper feeding, health monitoring, pasture management and record-keeping
- Establish, maintain and upgrade pasture systems — introducing improved grass varieties, rotational grazing and fodder production for optimal livestock productivity
- Oversee crop husbandry operations including cocoa, maize and vegetable production — from land preparation through planting, weeding, pest management and harvesting
- Manage the banana plantation — suckers, soil fertility management, bunch management and market linkage
- Operate and maintain the greenhouse unit — managing controlled-environment crop production, irrigation scheduling and post-harvest handling
- Manage the apiary (beekeeping) — hive maintenance, honey harvesting, colony health and processing for market
- Manage the poultry unit — broilers and/or layers, feed management, disease prevention, production records and sales
- Maintain a robust farm inventory system — tracking inputs, equipment, produce and assets with accurate records
- Develop and implement a farm marketing strategy — identifying buyers, negotiating prices, building supply relationships and ensuring timely produce sales
- Develop, monitor and report on a farm budget — tracking expenditures, revenues and profitability per enterprise unit
- Introduce and champion innovative, start-up thinking — piloting new crops, techniques and revenue streams to diversify and strengthen the farm enterprise
- Prepare regular operational and financial reports for submission to WDF management
- Ensure compliance with environmental, health and safety standards on the farm premises
Person Specification
- Bachelor’s degree or Diploma in Agriculture, Agribusiness, Animal Science, Farm Management or a related field; Agricultural qualification is an added advantage
- Minimum 2–3 years of practical farm management or agribusiness operations experience
- Demonstrable hands-on experience in at least three of the following: livestock, poultry, apiary, greenhouse, cocoa, maize or banana production
- Strong understanding of start-up farm dynamics — ability to build systems from scratch and manage in resource-constrained environments
- Entrepreneurial mindset with proven problem-solving and innovation capabilities
- Solid numeracy and inventory/record-keeping skills
- Leadership and people management experience — able to motivate a team in a remote setting
- Knowledge of or familiarity with Madi Okollo or the West Nile Region is highly desirable
- Willingness to be resident on or near the farm site in Madi Okollo
- Valid driving permit or riding license is an advantage
