About Media Challenge Initiative (MCI)
Media Challenge Initiative (MCI) is seeking a creative and culturally sensitive Graphics Designer to be based in Karamoja. The role focuses on visual storytelling that supports MCI’s work in media innovation, narrative shaping and local/rural journalism.
You will create high-quality visual content that amplifies youth and community stories, strengthens brand presence and makes complex ideas accessible for both digital and community-level audiences in Karamoja and beyond.
The Role: Graphics Designer
We are looking for a designer who can translate lived realities in Karamoja into visuals that inform, dignify, and move audiences — from social feeds to community events, from reports to campaigns.
Key Responsibilities
1. Visual Content Creation
Design graphics, illustrations, infographics, social media visuals, posters, and campaign materials that align with MCI’s brand identity
Create visual assets for news stories, training materials, reports and community outreach activities
Produce simple motion graphics or short video edits when needed to support storytelling
2. Campaign and Project Visuals
Develop visual concepts and materials for thematic campaigns (e.g., health, climate, youth, culture)
Design print and digital collateral for workshops, events, exhibitions, and awareness activities in Karamoja
Ensure all designs are culturally appropriate and effectively communicate with local audiences
3. Brand Consistency
Apply and maintain MCI’s visual identity guidelines across all design outputs
Contribute creative ideas to improve the visual presentation of MCI’s work in rural and regional contexts
4. Documentation and Asset Management
Document local stories and activities through photography and visual recording
Organize and maintain a digital library of design assets and visual materials from Karamoja projects
Prepare design files for both digital and print production
5. Capacity Building Support
Share basic design skills and visual storytelling techniques with young journalists and apprentices during workshops and daily work
Provide design feedback and revisions to ensure quality and consistency
Application procedure
Applications should be sent to MCI via email hr@mciug.org. Clearly indicate “Graphics Designer – Karamoja” in the subject line. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.
A detailed CV
A cover letter (maximum 1 page)
A portfolio link or PDF (maximum 10 pieces) showcasing relevant design work, especially any related to community, youth or development themes
Who We Are Looking For
Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design, Visual Communication, Fine Arts, Multimedia, or a related field
Minimum 2–4 years of professional experience in graphic design, preferably in media, NGOs, or community-focused projects
Strong portfolio demonstrating proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign), Canva and basic video/motion tools
Experience designing for both digital platforms and print materials
Cultural sensitivity and willingness to live and work in Karamoja
Highly creative and passionate about using design for social change and community storytelling
Adaptable, self-motivated, and able to deliver quality work with limited resources
Collaborative and enthusiastic about mentoring young creatives
Committed to ethical visual representation and MCI’s mission of sustainable African media
Why This Role Matters
Karamoja’s stories deserve to be told with dignity, nuance, and visual power — by someone embedded in the community, not flown in.
Your work will shape how audiences across Uganda and beyond see Karamoja, and how young journalists and creatives in the region learn to tell their own stories visually.
Ready to Apply?
