Key Working Relationships (Non-Supervisory):

  • Electrical Engineer
  • Refrigeration Engineer
  • Production Teams
  • Procurement / Stores
  • External Contractors & Fabricators

Job purpose:

The Draughtsman is the organization’s technical drawing authority, responsible for the production, management, revision control, and archiving of all engineering drawings, schematics, and technical documentation required to support maintenance operations, plant modifications, and engineering projects. Reporting to the Maintenance Manager, this role underpins the entire maintenance and engineering function by ensuring that every technician, engineer, and contractor has access to accurate, current, and clearly presented technical drawings.

Working with CAD software (2D and 3D where applicable), the Senior Draughtsman translates verbal briefs, engineering sketches, site measurements, and OEM documentation into professional-grade drawings including general arrangement drawings, detailed component drawings, piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), electrical schematics, workshop layout plans, and fabrication drawings.

At the level, this role goes beyond draughting to encompass drawing standards governance, document management system administration, and technical drawing mentorship. The Draughtsman ensures drawing quality, revision integrity, and archive completeness across the entire organization’s engineering asset base — from the farms, mills to workshop facilities and plant equipment.

Key Responsibilities:

Technical Drawing Production

  • Produce accurate, fully dimensioned engineering drawings using CAD software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or equivalent in use) including: general arrangement (GA) drawings, detailed component drawings, assembly drawings, fabrication drawings, and installation drawings.
  • Produce and maintain Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) for refrigeration systems, IT and Electrical lines, drainage systems, and compressed air systems in collaboration with the relevant engineers.
  • Produce electrical schematics, single-line diagrams, panel layout drawings, and cable routing plans in collaboration with the Electrical Engineer.
  • Develop workshops, depot, and facility layout drawings including equipment positions, access routes, drainage, and safety zone markings.

Drawing Revision Control & Document Management

Maintain a comprehensive, version-controlled drawing register covering all engineering assets — ensuring every drawing has a unique number, current revision status, issue date, and authorization record.

Implement and enforce the organization’s drawing revision control procedure: no drawing is re-issued without a formal revision cloud, revision index update, and superseded-copy withdrawal.

Administer the drawing archive (electronic and hard copy where required), ensuring drawings are filed, searchable, and backed up in accordance with document retention policies.

Collect and incorporate as-built mark-ups from site engineers and contractors following installation or modification works, updating the record drawings to reflect actual installed conditions.

Periodically audit the drawing archive to identify obsolete, missing, or unapproved drawings and take corrective action to maintain archive integrity.

Site Surveys & As-Built Documentation

Conduct site surveys and physical measurements of plant, equipment, and workshop facilities to produce accurate as-built drawings where original documentation is unavailable or outdated.

Use appropriate measurement tools — tape measures, laser distance meters, vernier callipers — to capture precise dimensions for drawing production.

Photograph and document existing installations to support drawing production and asset documentation programmes.

Technical Standards & Drawing Quality

Apply and enforce engineering drawing standards across all produced drawings — including ISO 128 (technical drawings), ISO 3511 (P&ID symbols), IEC 60617 (electrical symbols), and any company-specific drafting standards.

Check all drawings prior to issue for accuracy of dimensions, tolerances, material specifications, surface finishes, weld symbols, and title block information.

Develop and maintain drawing templates, title block standards, symbol libraries, and CAD layer conventions to ensure consistency across all engineering documentation.

Project & Maintenance Support

Provide drawing support for planned maintenance shutdowns, plant modification projects, and capital engineering works — producing drawing packages on time to support project schedules.

Participate in engineering design reviews, providing draughting input and flagging any constructability or drawing-standard issues before drawings are issued for construction or fabrication.

Support the preparation of maintenance procedure documentation, SOPs, and work instruction diagrams that aid technicians in carrying out complex maintenance tasks safely and correctly.

Assist in the preparation of equipment specifications, Bills of Quantities (BOQs), and parts lists derived from engineering drawings for use by procurement and stores.

Knowledge Transfer

Provide guidance and on-the-job coaching to technicians in CAD tools, drawing standards, and document management practices where applicable.

Conduct periodic drawing quality reviews and provide constructive feedback to improve the standard of technical documentation across the maintenance team

Education:

For a Ugandan-trained professional, the following qualifications are required or preferred:

Minimum Academic Qualifications:

Diploma in Civil Engineering, or Architectural Draughting from a recognized Ugandan institution — including Kyambogo University, Uganda Technical Colleges (UTC), Makerere University, or NITA-U accredited polytechnics.

A Bachelor’s Degree in Civil/Structural Engineering, or Architectural Draughting or a related engineering discipline is strongly preferred at this level.

Professional / Technical Training (Required or Preferred):

Proficiency in AutoCAD (2D essential; 3D an advantage) – a formal AutoCAD certification from Autodesk or an accredited training institution is an added advantage.

Working knowledge of SolidWorks, Revit, CATIA, or similar 3D CAD platforms is an advantage.

Training in Engineering Drawing Standards — ISO 128, ISO 3511, IEC 60617, or equivalent.

Document Management System (DMS) training — experience with electronic document control platforms.

P&ID interpretation and production training for process piping and instrumentation systems.

Membership of or affiliation with the Uganda Institution of Professional Engineers (UIPE) or equivalent professional body is an advantage.

Skills and Experience:

Minimum Experience:

At least 1–2 years of hands-on experience as a draughtsman or CAD technician in a maintenance engineering, manufacturing, construction, or industrial environment.

Demonstrated experience producing a wide range of engineering drawings — mechanical, electrical, civil/structural, and P&ID — to professional standards.

Prior experience administering a drawing register and document management system in an engineering organization.

Experience working in an agro-processing, manufacturing, or utilities environment is an advantage.

Core Technical Skills:

Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD and at least one other CAD platform (SolidWorks, Revit, or similar).

Ability to produce GA drawings, detailed component drawings, P&IDs, electrical schematics, and fabrication drawings to professional standard.

Strong understanding of engineering drawing conventions, GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing), and industry drawing standards.

Competency in document management and revision control systems and procedures.

Ability to carry out site measurement surveys and translate field data into accurate drawings.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) for report writing and drawing registersCompetencies:

Attitude and Motivation:

The ideal candidate must demonstrate the following personal attributes:

Precision-Driven: Considers accuracy in technical drawing to be non-negotiable — a dimension is either correct or it is wrong, and wrong is not acceptable.

Ownership of the Archive: Takes personal pride in maintaining a clean, complete, and current drawing register — the organisation’s engineering memory is in their care.

Proactive Communicator: Does not wait for errors to be discovered — raises drawing queries, dimensional ambiguities, or scope gaps with the relevant engineer before starting work.

Service Mindset: Understands that every delayed or inaccurate drawing affects someone downstream — a mechanic without the right diagram, a planner without the right layout, a contractor without the right fabrication detail.

Self-Disciplined: Manages their own workload and drawing queue effectively, meeting deadlines consistently without requiring close supervision.

Technology Enthusiast: Embraces CAD software development and digital documentation trends and proactively explores how new tools can enhance drawing quality and efficiency.

Collaborative & Humble: Works constructively with engineers of different disciplines, accepting technical corrections graciously and incorporating feedback to improve their work.

Safety-Aware: Understands that drawings for pressure systems, electrical installations, and structural components carry safety implications — treats the responsibility of producing such drawings with appropriate gravity.
