Reports to:Project Officer – Gender

Job Purpose

The Gender and Protection Assistant will support the Gender and Protection Officer in implementing activities aimed at promoting gender equality, safeguarding vulnerable groups, and ensuring protection mainstreaming within all URRI interventions. He or she will facilitate community mobilization, capacity building, case follow-up, and reporting to strengthen inclusive and protective environments for both refugee and host community members.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Engage community-based structures, including women’s groups, youth associations, and local leaders, to promote gender equality and protection awareness.
  • Support integration of gender-responsive approaches like Gender Action Learning System (GALs) across all URRI project activities and three outcome areas to ensure equitable participation of women, men, youth, and persons with disabilities.
  • Assist in identifying, documenting, and referring protection concerns, including genderbased violence (GBV) and child protection cases, following established referral pathways.
  • Provide basic psychosocial support and link survivors to appropriate service providers in coordination with the Gender and Protection Officer.
  • Facilitate training sessions and dialogues on gender equality, GBV prevention, protection rights, and community-based safeguarding.
  • Conduct outreach campaigns to raise awareness on gender roles, conflict resolution, and the rights of vulnerable individuals.
  • Assist in the establishment and management of women, youth, or child-friendly spaces to promote participation, counseling, and peer support.
  • Collect gender and protection data, document success stories, and prepare weekly and monthly reports for the Gender and Protection Officer.
  • Work closely with community-based protection committees, local leaders, and district gender and probation officers to enhance referral networks.
  • Support regular monitoring of protection-related activities and identify emerging risks affecting refugees and host communities.
  • Participate in campaigns and dialogues to reduce GBV incidents and promote positive gender norms.
  • Ensure equal participation of women, men, and marginalized groups in decision-making processes within project activities.
  • Adhere to CEFORD’s and URRI’s safeguarding policies, ensuring that beneficiaries are protected from sexual exploitation, abuse, and harassment.
  • Maintain updated referral directories and follow up on cases referred to service providers to ensure timely support.
  • Support community advocacy efforts aimed at addressing harmful social practices and improving access to protection services.


Person Specifications and Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or Diploma in Social Work and Social Administration, Gender Studies, Community Development, Human Rights.
  • At least 3 years of experience in gender using GALs methodology, protection, or GBV related work within humanitarian or development settings.
  • Strong understanding of protection principles, referral mechanisms, and gender mainstreaming practices.
  • Experience in community facilitation, case follow-up, and psychosocial support is an added advantage.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and report-writing skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse teams and maintain confidentiality and empathy.
